India's UPI Crosses 20 Billion Monthly Transactions, Reshaping Global Digital Payments

India’s Unified Payments Interface has crossed 20 billion monthly transactions for the first time, processing Rs 28 lakh crore in value during March 2026. The milestone underscores UPI’s transformation from a domestic payment system into a model that countries worldwide are seeking to replicate.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced that UPI now has 450 million active users, with rural transactions growing at 35% year-on-year compared to 18% in urban areas, indicating deepening financial inclusion.

Seven countries have now adopted or are piloting UPI-based systems, including Singapore, UAE, France, and Sri Lanka. NPCI International has signed agreements with 12 more nations for potential UPI deployment.
