Tata Group Unveils Rs 50,000 Crore Semiconductor Fab in Gujarat

Tata Group has officially inaugurated India’s first advanced semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, marking a watershed moment in the country’s quest for semiconductor self-reliance. The Rs 50,000 crore facility, built in partnership with Taiwan’s PSMC, will begin producing 28-nanometre chips by early 2027.

The plant, spread across 200 acres in the Dholera Special Investment Region, will initially create 5,000 direct jobs and is expected to generate 20,000 indirect employment opportunities. At full capacity, the facility will produce 50,000 wafers per month.

Strategic significance

The fab represents India’s most significant step towards reducing dependence on imported semiconductors, which currently account for $30 billion in annual imports. The global chip shortage of 2021-23 exposed the vulnerability of nations without domestic chip manufacturing capabilities.

This is not just a factory. This is a statement of India’s technological ambition. We are building the foundation for India’s digital future.
