Five hundred universities across India have formally adopted the Academic Bank of Credits system under the National Education Policy 2020, marking a transformative shift in how higher education is structured and delivered in the country.
The new system allows students to accumulate credits from multiple institutions and exit at different stages with appropriate certifications: a certificate after one year, diploma after two, a bachelor’s degree after three, and an honours degree after four years of study.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described the implementation as the ‘most significant reform in Indian higher education in decades’, noting that it gives students unprecedented flexibility and reduces the pressure of rigid academic timelines.
