India’s most ambitious hiking trail has officially opened, connecting the Western Ghats from Kerala to Maharashtra along a 2,100-kilometre route that traverses some of the country’s most spectacular and biodiverse landscapes.
The Great Western Ghats Trail, developed over five years with input from ecologists, tribal communities, and adventure tourism experts, passes through six states, 12 national parks, and dozens of village communities. It is designed to be completed in sections, with each segment offering accommodation in eco-lodges and village homestays.
The trail has been designed to minimise environmental impact while providing sustainable livelihoods for communities along the route. Village committees manage sections of the trail, providing guides, meals, and accommodation to hikers.
