India and Japan Sign Historic Defence Pact Amid Indo-Pacific Tensions

India and Japan have signed a landmark defence cooperation agreement in New Delhi, marking a significant deepening of bilateral security ties. The pact, signed by the defence ministers of both nations, includes provisions for joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and co-development of defence technology.

The agreement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, with both nations seeking to counterbalance growing assertiveness in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Key provisions of the agreement

Under the new framework, Indian and Japanese forces will conduct regular joint naval patrols in the Indian Ocean. The agreement also establishes a joint working group on cybersecurity and space defence, reflecting the evolving nature of modern security threats.

Analysts have described the pact as one of the most significant defence agreements India has signed in recent years, potentially reshaping the security architecture of the Indo-Pacific region.

This agreement represents a natural evolution of our strategic partnership. Together, India and Japan are committed to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The agreement was welcomed by strategic affairs experts, who noted that it builds on years of growing cooperation between the two nations, including the Malabar naval exercises and the 2+2 ministerial dialogue format.
